Structure

Medway  Council operated Medway Outdoor Education Centre at the Strand for over 40 years. In view of financial constraints on local authorities (along with the general economic situation) in 2008 they looked to outsource the facility. Having been unsuccessful in finding a suitable organisation to outsource to, a group of local businessmen were approached to form a charitable trust to take over the centre.

Medway Watersports Trust operated the centre from 2010 obtaining charitable status in March 2012. From the 1st April 2014, Medway Council completely withdrew funding and the Medway Watersports Trust then took over full responsibility for the operation.

As the buildings on the upper site at the Strand were needed for other purposes, Medway Watersports Trust moved to the lower site at the Strand where the Council have granted them a short term lease with the objective of granting them a long term lease to enable funding to be obtained for a new Watersports centre.

In the meantime the Trust is making use of temporary buildings on the lower site.
The Watersports operation currently includes a nursery site at Chatham Maritime no.2 basin.

Medway Watersports Trust's charitable objectives are to provide watersports for the youths and young adults of Medway, especially the disadvantaged. We also offer watersports activities to the wider population and encourage the people of Medway to take full advantage of the River Medway and other facilities on their doorstep.

Medway Watersports Trust is an RYA (Royal Yachting Association) training centre, a British Canoeing training centre and is licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Services to provide facilities to local schools and youth organisations.

If you are interested in volunteering, donating to our charity or sponsoring our youths we would love to hear from you, please
